Verse 1
Last night my little boy was crying in his sleep.
He woke up and said: “Daddy, please stay here with me.”
Something scared him on the news I’d been watching on TV.
Then I remembered how my mother would comfort me.
Chorus 1
(She’d sing) Close your eyes.
Say goodnight.
Sleep until the morning light.
The dark isn’t as frightening as it seems.
Just say a prayer.
Don’t be scared.
Think of me and I’ll be there.
Goodnight, little angel, sweet dreams.
Verse 2
The day my son was born I swore I’d take good care of him.
But last night I felt as helpless as paper in the wind.
I can save him from the monsters hiding under his bed.
But couldn’t chase away those pictures locked in his head.
Chorus 2
(So I sang) Close your eyes.
Say goodnight.
And then I went and told a lie.
I said the world’s not as frightening as it seems.
Just say a prayer.
Don’t be scared.
Think of me and I’ll be there.
Goodnight, little angel, sweet dreams.
Bridge
Then I kissed his cheek; watched him fall asleep.
And made a wish as I sat beside his bed.
I hoped someday soon when we’re in his room
I’d sing words to him that are true instead.
Chorus 3
(And they’d be) Close your eyes.
Say goodnight.
Sleep until the morning light.
The dark isn’t as frightening as it seems.
Just say a prayer.
Don’t be scared.
It’s a safe and peaceful world out there.
Goodnight, little angel, sweet dreams.
Goodnight, all you angels, sweet dreams.
